The GWN7721PE is a Layer 2-Lite managed switch that adds a single 10GbE copper port with PoE, PoE+, and PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt) support to the GWN7721 platform. The GWN7721 Series now has three SKUs: the GWN7721, which carries 8 × 2.5GbE ports and two 10G SFP+ uplinks but no PoE at all; the GWN7721P, which adds PoE/PoE+ across those eight 2.5GbE ports at up to 30W per port; and the new GWN7721PE, which replaces one of the two SFP+ uplinks with a 10GbE copper port capable of delivering up to 90W to a single powered device. The PE variant is the only member of the series that can supply 802.3bt-class power.

The switch ships with 10 total ports: 8 × 2.5GbE RJ45 ports that each support up to 30W via IEEE 802.3af/at, one 10GbE RJ45 port that supports up to 90W via IEEE 802.3af/at/bt, and one 10G SFP+ uplink port for the backbone connection. Total PoE budget across all nine powered ports is 130W. The SFP+ uplink remains unaffected by PoE draw, keeping the backbone connection bottleneck-free under full concurrent load.
Which powered devices actually need 90 watts, and why does that matter for an AV or IT installer?
PTZ cameras and Wi-Fi 6/7 access points are the two device classes that most commonly push past the 30W ceiling of standard PoE+. A high-end PTZ camera with pan-tilt motors, integrated IR illumination, and onboard heating for outdoor enclosures can approach or exceed 60W; Wi-Fi 7 multi-radio access points from several manufacturers now carry 802.3bt requirements in the 60–90W range. Without a PoE++ port, installers have to run a separate power supply or a midspan injector to those devices, adding cost and a point of failure. The GWN7721PE's 10GbE port eliminates that workaround for one high-draw device per switch, the configuration that fits the majority of small-room or single-zone deployments.
What does PoE Watchdog do, and how does it change day-two management?
PoE Watchdog monitors the link status of each powered device and automatically power-cycles any port whose device stops responding. For a camera or access point that has locked up, a routine failure mode in always-on deployments, this replaces a truck roll with an automatic reboot. In a distributed deployment across a hotel property, a school, or a multi-tenant building, the reduction in on-site visits can materially affect service cost over a one- or two-year support contract.
What Layer 2 and security features does the GWN7721PE carry?
The switch supports port-based VLAN isolation and VLAN transparent mode for segmenting guest, office, VoIP, and camera traffic. Multi-layer Quality of Service (QoS) covers priority mapping, queue scheduling, and bandwidth control with both DSCP and IEEE 802.1p marking. Security features include IGMP snooping, storm control, DHCP snooping, and loop detection. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid STP (RSTP) provide redundancy and faster convergence. The GWN7721PE is built for the installation type that keeps coming up in small-to-medium commercial work: a single closet or IDF feeding a mix of IP phones, a PTZ camera or two, one or two Wi-Fi access points, and a handful of workstations, where the 30W ceiling of standard PoE+ is a recurring constraint and running a separate power supply to the camera adds cost and a failure point the client will eventually call about.

The 90W port solves that problem for one device per switch. That is the right scope for most single-zone deployments. Integrators specifying multi-PTZ or multi-radio Wi-Fi 7 environments where two or more 802.3bt devices land in the same closet will still need a switch with a broader PoE++ port count, the GWN7721PE is not that switch.

Three questions worth putting to Grandstream before the spec is locked: First, if the total PoE budget is 130W across nine ports, what is the thermal behavior when the 90W port is fully loaded simultaneously with all eight 2.5GbE ports near their 30W ceiling? Published budget headroom math says that scenario is near the rated maximum. Second, confirm that the GWN7721PE-specific regulatory certifications (FCC, CE, or UL listing where required) are in hand before specifying into a government, healthcare, or education project with compliance sign-off on the schedule. Third, PoE Watchdog’s automatic power-cycle behavior is a net positive for unattended deployments, but integrators should confirm whether cycle events are logged in GDMS and whether alerts can be pushed, knowing that a camera rebooted at 2:00 a.m. is operationally different from finding out after the fact.
