Daktronics Launches See-Through LED Window Displays in 55-Inch and 70-Inch Sizes for Retail and Restaurant Storefronts

The transparent LED displays mount interior-facing against storefront glass, replacing static window signage with remotely managed digital content.

What is new from Daktronics for retail?
Daktronics, headquartered in Brookings, South Dakota, announced the availability of see-through LED window displays for retail stores, convenience stores, gas stations, quick-serve restaurants, and shopping center environments. The product extends the company's on-premise digital signage portfolio into the storefront window as a dedicated installation location.
How are these displays physically configured and where do they mount?
The displays are designed for interior, window-facing installation, mounted inside the storefront and projecting content outward through the glass toward customers approaching from outside. Standard sizes are 55 inches and 70 inches diagonal, in portrait orientation to suit common storefront window proportions. Individual units can be placed as standalone displays or connected side by side to span wider window areas. The transparency of the LED structure allows natural light to pass through, preserving sight lines into the store.
What problem is the product designed to solve for retailers and restaurant operators?
The displays are positioned as a replacement for static window clings and printed posters, which require reprinting to change messaging and cannot be updated in real time. Product Manager Bill Hadsell said the storefront window is "one of the most underused communication spaces" for brick-and-mortar businesses, and that the displays are "purpose-built for that space, helping brands influence customers before they walk in while maintaining a positive in-store experience by allowing daylight to shine through it." Intended use cases include promotions, daypart-specific messaging, limited-time offers, and seasonal campaigns.
How is content managed across one or multiple locations?
Content scheduling and management runs through Venus Control Suite, Daktronics' centralized digital signage software platform. Operators can update messaging across a single location or push changes across distributed retail and restaurant networks from one interface, without reprinting or on-site visits to change content.
Which installation environments does Daktronics identify as target applications?
Daktronics lists convenience stores, gas stations, storefront windows in mall settings, forecourt- and parking-lot-facing locations, walk-up and drive-by restaurant environments, and interior windows communicating to adjacent spaces within a building.

The Take

What should a digital signage integrator verify before specifying see-through LED window displays for a retail or QSR client?

The concept is straightforward: capture the customer before they reach the door, while maintaining outside visibility. The installation reality deserves a closer look before the spec gets written.

Three variables determine whether this product delivers in a real storefront. First, ambient light. On a see-through panel mounted against glass, the questions worth putting to Daktronics are how bright the display drives for an exterior viewer and how it holds contrast against direct sun during peak daylight hours. Daktronics has not published a brightness figure in nits (cd/m²) for the offering. Integrators should ask for the outdoor-facing brightness spec and match it against the ambient light conditions at the client’s specific storefront orientation. And understand what it looks like for customers within the retail environmennt looking out through the window.

Second, thermal management. Before committing a client to a flush-to-glass mounting depth, integrators should confirm the operating temperature range and any ventilation requirements Daktronics specifies, and how those hold up in a sun-facing storefront where the glass runs hot.

Third, content strategy. The Venus Control Suite dependency means the client takes on a software platform relationship alongside the hardware purchase. For a multi-location quick-serve restaurant operator already running a content management system, the question is whether Venus integrates with their existing workflow or requires a parallel content operation. For a single-location retailer with no existing digital signage, Venus is the starting point, but that’s a training and onboarding conversation, not just a hardware spec.

The 55-inch and 70-inch portrait sizes cover typical convenience store and QSR window proportions cleanly. The side-by-side tiling option adds flexibility for wider storefronts without a custom SKU.
